What is Oriental Medicine?

Oriental Medicine is a time-tested holistic healthcare system, which encompasses acupuncture, herbs, and various therapeutic modalities to enhance one’s health.  Each treatment is tailored to individual’s specific constitution to achieve maximum therapeutic benefit.  Top

Acupuncture

Acupuncture is a special technique where very thin sterilized needles are inserted into specific body points to restore balance in the body and psyche.  Acupuncture points are connected to each other by special pathways called body meridians.  When points are stimulated, they have profound effect on body tissues and organs.  Top

 Herbs

Chinese herbal system is an art and science of combining numerous herbs and therapeutic substances to help restore one’s health.  You may take herbs internally or use them externally as liniments or plasters.  Top

 Is it safe?

Yes!  There are virtually no side effects.  The needles are sterilized and single use.  Moreover, each treatment is individualized and based on your unique characteristics.  Top

 Does it hurt?

Usually, not.  Acupuncture needles may cause a mild dull pressure-like sensation, which can actually be adjusted to your comfort level. Top

Which conditions will respond to                              Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine?

          Partial list includes:

  • Musculoskeletal (pain, whiplash, bursitis, tendinitis, sciatica, fibromyalgia, scoliosis, arthritis)

  • Addictions (e.g. smoking)]

  • Digestive (nausea, colitis, indigestion, constipation, diarrhea, IBS)

  • Reproductive (PMS, menopause, infertility, irregular periods, incontinence, impotence)

  • Respiratory (infections, asthma, sinus problems, bronchitis, allergies)

  • Cardiovascular (high blood pressure, circulation problems)

  • Mental/emotional (anxiety, depression, stress, insomnia)

  • Endocrine (diabetes, obesity, thyroid dysfunctions)

  • Skin (eczema, acne)

 How does acupuncture work?

From a scientific prospective acupuncture can augment immunity, stimulate release of endorphins, affect levels of some neurotransmitters, constrict or dilate blood vessels, and close certain nerve gates to reduce pain transmission.

From traditional point of view, illness occurs when the energy flow of the body called Qi (pronounced “Chee”) is imbalanced, interrupted, or insufficient.  Acupuncture can restore balance in the body by changing the flow of “Qi,” thereby promoting health.  Top

How many treatments do I need?

Number of treatments will vary from person to person.  Some people may come in for maintenance sessions once a month, while others may need to come in 3x/week as part of their initial intensive plan.  It may be less sessions for acute conditions, however, it may take longer for chronic conditions to heal, i.e., patients may get relief from several sessions, but in order for that effect to last, they may need to come in for more treatments.
